In one of the biggest upsets in boxing history, Ryan Garcia defeated the defending light welterweight champion Devin Haney via majority decision in Brooklyn, New York. After receiving much media attention for his actions leading up to the fight, the 25-year-old dropped Haney three times; the scorecard said 112-112, 114-110, and 115-109.
Garcia’s weight of 143.2 pounds on Friday—3.2 pounds over the division limit—was the reason behind the bout’s rescheduling from their original 12-round scheduled encounter at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. This mishap was seen as a result of poor preparation and discord in Garcia’s camp. Additionally, it put Garcia in a position where he could only win Haney’s spotless professional record and not his championship. That’s precisely what happened in the face of great odds.

How Did Ryan Garcia Defeat Devin Haney
Garcia won the fight on Saturday night by majority decision but was not awarded the championship because he was over the weight restriction. Garcia knocked down Haney three times and delivered the WBC super lightweight champion his first defeat.
Throughout the build-up, Garcia’s peculiar behavior in public and on social media raised concerns about his level of seriousness about this battle. When he was almost 3 pounds over the 140-pound limit on Friday, it was apparent that he hadn’t dedicated enough time to his preparation.
Haney was hurt in the first round and lost the eighth, tenth, and eleventh rounds due to the force and quickness of his hands.
