Two of the greatest boxers in the world, Gervonta “Tank” Davis and David Benavidez, will square off this weekend in Las Vegas as part of a packed Premier Boxing Champions fight card.
In the main event on June 15, 2024, Davis will defend his WBA lightweight title against the unbeaten Frank Martin.
Having knocked out 93.1% of his opponents, Davis is among the best punchers in boxing. A previous junior lightweight world champion, Davis won his first lightweight championship when the WBA promoted him to full champion.
How Gervonta Davis’ Nickname ‘Tank Davis’ Originated?
According to Mayweather Promotions, one of Davis’s previous trainers nicknamed him “Tank” when he was younger because of the size of his head compared to that of his body.
That was back when he was an amateur, and the moniker stayed. Since he is the most tremendous power puncher in his fighting style, the term “Tank” suddenly makes sense.
Given the force he punches, it would be appropriate, given that his opponents would undoubtedly believe that a tank has struck them.

Backstory Behind The Upcoming Fight
With their undefeated records, two of the best boxers in the weight class square off against each other in the fight between Davis and Martin. Both men are 29 and have experience competing as rising sports stars.
The two had a heated sparring session in Floyd Mayweather’s gym. Davis acknowledged that Martin struck him with a mighty left hand, but he maintains that Martin also felt his strength.
