“Euphoria” actress Sydney Sweeney is slated to star in a yet-to-be-named sports biopic centered on the life of boxing legend Christy Martin, affectionately labeled ‘the female Rocky’ by the movie’s creators. Sweeney will take on the iconic boxer Christy Martin role in the upcoming biographical film.
Directed by David Michod, the project aims to depict Martin’s journey to becoming America’s most renowned female boxer of the 1990s, as the film’s producers described.
Sydney Sweeney Takes On Iconic Role
Sweeney rose to prominence in 2018 with roles in television series like “Everything Sucks!” and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” as well as the limited series “Sharp Objects.” However, her upcoming role in the boxing world will mark a departure for Sweeney, best known for her work in HBO’s “Euphoria” and “White Lotus.”
Additionally, she has recently appeared in projects ranging from the romantic comedy “Anyone But You” to the horror film “Immaculate” and the superhero movie “Madame Web.”
“I grappled and did kickboxing from 12-19 years old. I’ve been itching to get back into the ring, train, and transform my body,” Sweeney said. “Christy’s story isn’t a light one, it’s physically and emotionally demanding, there’s a lot of weight to carry. But I love challenging myself.“
Despite her boxing success, Christy Martin’s personal life was marred by tragedy and turmoil. Especially after she met her manager and later husband, Jim Martin, in 1989, their relationship, which was toxic and highly publicized, deteriorated as Jim became increasingly vindictive.
