Frank Martin will put his undefeated record on the line against fellow undefeated Gervonta Davis this weekend. Davis, the WBA lightweight champion, is a humongous betting favorite for the fight. On the other hand, the underdog Martin has the blessings of Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Davis was once Mayweather’s protege but has become enemies now. That is not the case with Martin. Interestingly, Martin sparred with Davis when he was under Mayweather’s wing. Martin has claimed he rocked Davis in sparring, which the WBA champion has vehemently denied.
Floyd Mayweather’s advice to Frank Martin for boxing success
Mayweather was the biggest boxing star of the twentieth century. Even after he retired from professional boxing, Mayweather accumulated wealth through amateur bouts. In 50 professional fights inside the ring, nobody could defeat Mayweather. Martin has trained under Mayweather and recently revealed the advice he got from the undefeated pugilist on the Pivot podcast.
“He [Floyd Mayweather] could tell you, “Man, go run at 2:41 in the morning. Go do it when you can because 9 out of 10 times, we know your opponent is asleep at that time.” So, go run at 2 in the morning and get yourself a mental edge…It could be little things that’ll take you to the next level,” said Martin on the podcast
“A person like Floyd, if he tells you that, you’re going to take a lot of heed to it, and it’s going to give you a different type of motivation when you’re doing it. He could show you something, and it could be the same thing. You might not be able to do it like him, but just it coming from him will give you a different type of feel about yourself,” Martin added.
Nevertheless, Martin will have to dig deep to defeat Davis. Martin had dug deep in his previous fight against Artem Harutyunyan. However, Davis is a different beast. The WBA champion is looking physically stronger than ever before. Combat sports saw many upsets in 2024. Therefore, Martin will be looking to do the same.
