Floyd Mayweather Jr. made more money than any other combat sports athlete in the first two decades of the twenty-first century. Even after he retired, Mayweather accumulated with high-profile exhibition matches. One of them was against John Gotti III, which ended controversially.
Gotti III is the grandson of John Gotti, the former head of the Gambino crime family. In June 2023, Mayweather fought Gotti III at the Amerant Bank Arena. The fight ended in a No-Contest after excessive trash talk inside the ring set off a brawl inside and outside the ring.
Floyd Mayweather and John Gotti square off again in Mexico City
Floyd Mayweather has not fought since the No Contest against Gotti III. The undefeated boxer had earlier announced he would rematch Gotti III on the Super Bowl LVIII weekend. However, it didn’t materialize. Mayweather had recently flirted with fighting in Mexico City in August.
However, many felt he would be rematching Victor Ortiz, a former opponent of Mayweather. As Mayweather announced on Instagram, it was a rumor that he would rematch John Gotti III in Mexico City on August 24. Billed as Unfinished Business, Mayweather has not yet disclosed the venue’s location.
However, he has revealed that DAZN will livestream the matchup. In their first fight, Mayweather put on a clinic against Gotti III. This is why Gotti III resorted to excessive trash-talking, as he couldn’t land any significant strike on the undefeated boxer. The rematch will likely be identical, barring a shocking one-shot from Gotti III.
Leonard Ellerbe recently stepped down as CEO of Money Promotions, and Richard Schaefer is now its CEO. Mayweather recently feuded with Gervonta Davis, his former protegee. He even urged fans to watch the UFC Apex event instead of Davis vs. Martin. How the Money Team promotes the event without Ellerbe remains to be seen.
