Canelo Alvarez has long reigned supreme as the face of boxing, particularly in the North Americas. Even though he has won titles at light heavyweight and middleweight, Alvarez has found his home at middleweight, where he is the undisputed champion. However, one fault that fight fans have seen with Alvarez is his reluctance to fight the undefeated David Benavidez.
Benavidez was the youngest super middleweight champion in history. He is a two-time champion in the division and is presently the interim WBC champion with two title defenses. Benavidez has been clamoring for a fight with Alvarez, but this never materialized. Therefore, he has moved to light heavyweight and will face Oleksandr Gvozdyk in his next fight.
David Benavidez Bashes Canelo Alvarez and Sanctioning Bodies
Due to Alvarez, Benavidez’s chance to become an undisputed champion at super middleweight won’t likely happen. However, it has not stopped Benavidez from pursuing the undisputed status at a higher weight class. Benavidez recently spoke with Stephen Jackson on the latest FIGHT TOWNS: MIAMI episode, revealing his frustration.
“So just because Canelo [Alvarez] can do what he wants, as he says, he’s not going to fight the top competition, and he’s holding all those belts hostage. It’s not like you don’t have other great fighters too. You’ve got me and David Morrell at 168. How is it fair that these sanctioning bodies let him pick and choose who he wants to fight?” said Benavidez to Jackson.
Benavidez stated the WBC had promised him a title shot twice but failed to honor it. He stated that Alvarez should’ve never fought Jermell Charlo and Jamie Munguia, citing that he deserved more than them. Moreover, he revealed that Alvarez’s next opponent was likely Edgar Berlanga, thus avoiding a fight with him again.
Benavidez has not shelved his dream of fighting Alvarez. However, his focus now is on Gvozdyk, the former WBC light heavyweight champion. The winner of the bout will face the winner of the undisputed light heavyweight bout between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol, the unified and WBA light heavyweight champion, respectively.
