Boxing is in a great, exciting state right now. Arguably, the sport’s biggest star is gearing up for yet another showdown. Canelo Alvarez, the undisputed king of the super middleweight division, will look to add another jewel to his crown. Sources reveal he is close to finalizing a fight against Edgar Berlanga.
The bout is set for September 14th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Interestingly, that’s the Mexican Independence Day weekend. Alvarez had basically made this holiday his personal fight night. Alvarez, 34, is still the boxing’s top dog. He has won titles in four weight classes: Super Middleweight, Junior Middleweight, Middleweight, and Light heavyweight. The Mexican boxer’s last knockout win was against Caleb Plant in 2021. Since then, he has been consistent, winning fights and retaining the title.
On the other side of the ring stands Edgar Berlanga. At 27 years of age, he has never fought for a world title. Berlanga started his career with 16 first-round knockouts. However, his last five fights went the distance. Moreover, this fight is going head-to-head with UFC 306 at the Sphere. There is a chance Canelo Alvarez’s IBF title won’t be on the line due to an overdue mandatory defense.
The event will certainly be a pay-per-view affair on Prime Video, with DAZN also streaming it. It will be Canelo’s third straight fight with PBC. For Berlanga, this is the opportunity of a lifetime. As for Canelo Alvarez, it is another chance to cement his already great legacy.
David Benavidez Gives Up The Interim Super Middleweight Title, Moves To Light Heavyweight
The man known as ‘The Mexican Monster,’ David Benavidez, has been making waves in the boxing world lately. He has finally decided to stop chasing the elusive Alvarez and set his sights on new horizons. Benavidez had been eyeing a fight with Canelo for what feels like centuries in boxing years. But he has been playing hard to get, leaving Benavidez high and dry.
So, David finally decided to take his talents to the light heavyweight division and leave the thought of Alvarez. The move means Benavidez will become the mandatory challenger for the winner of the Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol fight. That’s potentially a massive fight in the Boxing world, which is scheduled for October 21st in Riyadh.

However, this power move comes with a price. Benavidez will have to give up his WBC ‘interim’ super middleweight title. In the meantime, Canelo Alvarez himself is in the finalizing process for his title defense against Edgar Berlanga, so this move by Benavidez just might benefit him.
If Artur Beterbiev wins in October, fans could see a clash of titans with Benavidez. If Bivol comes out on top, Benavidez already feels confident about his chances. Either way, the light heavyweight division will get much more interesting in the foreseeable future.
