Canelo Alvarez is under fire from all directions in the combat sports world. Saudi Arabia’s Turki Alalshikh and Conor McGregor have already taken their swings at the Mexican Monster. Now, Oscar De La Hoya, the Golden Boy himself, has joined the fray, ripping into Canelo and accusing him of dodging David Benavidez. The pressure is mounting, and Canelo’s got everyone gunning for him.
The Mexican Monster’s rep for fighting the best is solid, but the buzz about him dodging Benavidez won’t quit. Hoya, who’s already got beef with Canelo, just fueled the drama by posting a video and calling him out over the same issue. In his video, Oscar De La Hoya stated:
“I’m not the only one who thinks Canelo is an arrogant piece of s*it. Turki Alalshikh recently revealed that Canelo refused to meet with him…He will do anything not to fight David Benavidez.”
Subsequently, Oscar De La Hoya claimed Canelo’s price was so sky-high that even the Saudis gave him the cold shoulder. He added that Canelo is using this inflated price as a smokescreen to avoid the risk of fighting Benavidez. De La Hoya further accused the Mexican of choosing fights that don’t generate much excitement instead of taking on the high-stakes bout with Benavidez that everyone’s buzzing about. However, as mentioned earlier, Hoya isn’t one who has trashed Canelo.
Conor McGregor Is Doubtful That Canelo Alvarez Will Hit The 300K Mark in PPV Buys
Everyone knows Conor McGregor doesn’t hold back, whether in or out of the arena. Known for his sharp trash talk, McGregor took a shot at Alvarez, claiming he can only draw around 300,000 buys. That’s a long way from the $200 million Alvarez is reportedly aiming for in a future fight. He stated:
“Canelo is a cornflake. He has about [300,000] buys in him. He does not generate nothing near what he seeks to be paid. UFC Noche [306] is going to run them from the strip. Sheik Turki was right, moving on. Canelo doesn’t sell.”

Indeed, with two big events in Las Vegas on September 14—UFC 306 at the high-tech Sphere and Canelo facing Edgar Berlanga at T-Mobile Arena—the competition for buys will be intense. However, since it’s Mexican Independence Day and Canelo is a huge legend, that should definitely help to get the numbers, and it looks like it’ll still pull in some decent figures.
