Combat sports legends are usually confined to colliding inside the ring. However, a new chapter has unfolded in the ongoing saga between boxing icon Manny Pacquiao and the management agency that oversees Conor McGregor’s affairs. After a protracted legal battle, Pacquiao has emerged victorious.
A California court overturned a previous breach of contract verdict that favored Paradigm Sports, the agency that manages McGregor. The origins of this legal tussle can be traced back to 2020. This was when Pacquiao signed a two-fight deal with Paradigm Sports to represent him in fight negotiations. The expectation was that this could pave the way for a much-anticipated showdown between Pacquiao and McGregor, who are both revered in their respective realms of boxing and MMA.
However, the relationship soon turned sour, with Paradigm suing Pacquiao for breach of contract. This was after the Filipino boxing legend agreed to fight Errol Spence Jr. instead of the proposed matchup with Mikey Garcia that Paradigm had been negotiating. Paradigm initially was seeking over $20 million in compensation from Pacquiao.
In 2023, a California jury ruled in favor of the agency, granting them the $3.3 million advance payment they had made to Pacquiao, along with an additional $1.8 million in damages. This verdict seemed to indicate that Paradigm had the upper hand, with Pacquiao potentially facing a hefty financial burden.
However, the tide has now turned in Pacquiao’s favor. Judge Walter P. Schwarm of the Superior Court of California overturned the 2023 verdict, declaring the Paradigm-Pacquiao contract “void due to illegality.” The judge’s decision was based on the fact that Paradigm’s management license for boxers in the state of California had not been properly renewed, rendering the contract unenforceable.
