Gervonta Davis and Vasiliy Lomachenko are among the biggest names in the lighter boxing weight classes. The undefeated Davis and two-time Olympic champion Lomachenko hold the WBA and IBF versions of the lightweight titles, respectively, though they have not faced each other.
Davis has an upcoming fight against Frank Martin, a fellow undefeated Southpaw. On the other hand, Lomachenko won the vacant IBF lightweight title with an eleventh-round TKO victory over George Kambosos Jr. Davis’s potential victory over Martin will likely set a fight with Lomachenko.
Bob Arum speaks on the title clash between Davis and Lomachenko
Top Rank CEO Bob Arum recently spoke with Boxing News’ Andi Purewal about high-profile boxing matches for the future. In the interview, Arum revealed what Top Rank and Premier Boxing Champions have in store for the lightweight boxing division.
“At this point in time, Davis and Loma is a bigger fight than Davis and Shakur, particularly after Shakur’s last performance, which he won very easily but was certainly not entertaining. Shakur will get his opportunity; he’s a terrific fighter,” said Arum of the biggest fight at lightweight.
“Both sides know it’s a big fight, which means they’re looking forward to earning a lot of money, and they’re both competitive guys. So, again, I’m optimistic that the negotiations will go well. You can never guarantee that, but the PBC guys are professional, my people are professionals, and they’ll work it out,” Arum added.
Nonetheless, for Gervonta Davis vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko to happen, the former must dispatch Frank Martin. Davis is a humongous favorite for the fight; even Ryan Garcia predicted an eight-round knockout for his former foe. Nevertheless, Martin is an adept Southpaw capable of fighting on the back foot. However, Martin had a terrible weight cut, further diminishing his chances of an upset.
