Former NFL running back Michael Cox has received a lucrative settlement from a well-documented lawsuit case in New York.
Cox suffered an ankle injury during the New York Giants’ 2014 road game against the Seattle Seahawks. Well-known New York orthopedic surgeon Dr. Dean Lorich performed the surgery on Cox’s injured ankle.
But Cox filed a lawsuit and alleged that Lorich failed to fully repair up his ankle. The injury essentially ended his football playing days.
Per Dean Balsamini and Kathianne Boniello of the New York Post, a jury sided with Cox and awarded him a whopping $28.5 million. Over half of it $15.5 million), comes in “future pain”, via Balsamini and Boniello
Lorich was found dead in Upper East Side home one year after Cox submitted the lawsuit. Police later ruled Lorich’s death a suicide.
Cox, a former standout running back for the Massachusetts Minutemen, was drafted in the seventh round by the Giants (253rd overall) in 2013. He saw 14 game appearances as a rookie and recorded 43 rushing yards on 22 carries.
Cox appeared in four games for the Giants in the 2014 season. He saw four carries for 33 yards before unfortunately suffering the career-ending injury in the Giants’ 38-17 loss to the Seahawks at Centurylink Field.

The former Minutemen standout played his first three seasons of college football at Michigan (2009 to 2011) before transferring to Massachusetts. In his last year of college football, Cox recorded 710 rushing yards and five touchdowns in 12 games.
With Cox unable to play football again, the Giants moved forward with the rushing duo of Andre Williams and Rashad Jennings for the 2014 season and most of 2015.. Former New England Patriots running back Shane Vereen, coming off a Super owl 49 championship-winning season was also added via free agency in 2015. He served primarily as a pass-catching back.
