Sean Payton is finally responding to the rumors that he wanted to partner up with Tom Brady on the Miami Dolphins…sort of.
The former New Orleans Saints coach told media at the event “he didn’t know anything about the Dolphins/Tom Brady reports.” Per ESPN’s Mike Triplett, Payton addressed the situation before even being asked about it.
“I have no clue about the Tampa Bay, Miami Dolphin, Tom Brady rumor,” Payton said. “My understanding is that there a request was put in or that intermediaries talked. I’m like the rest of you. I heard that story.”
A Miami plan was reportedly scrapped when former Dolphins coach Brian Flores filed a landmark lawsuit on February 1 — the same day Brady announced his retirement.
“If I would have been ready to coach like this year, I would have stayed in New Orleans,” Payton said. “And so it’s nice to have someone interested and, yeah, that’s about it. Look, our focus on Tom Brady has been beating him, not joining him.”

In the end, the Dolphins hired Mike McDaniels, Brady returned to the Buccaneers after a brief “retirement” and Payton appears headed for a TV job.
Payton’s denial does not mean that the reports were untrue, it just means it could still likely happen and he doesn’t want to screw things up by saying too much.
