Earlier today it was reported that the Indianapolis Colts would be ridding themselves of Carson Wentz’s contract by shipping him off to the Washington Commanders for a package of draft picks. At the time, not much was known besides the fact that the Commanders were giving up at least two third-round picks.
Now, the complete details of the trade have emerged, and they’re quite interesting, to say the least.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Colts are giving up Wentz and their second-round pick in 2022 for Washington’s 2022 second- and third-round picks, as well as a 2023 third-rounder than can become a second-rounder if Wentz plays more than 70 percent of the team’s snaps next year.
As part of the deal Washington will also be taking on the entirety of Wentz’s $28-million contract in 2022, including the $5-million roster bonus that’s due to him next week.
The Colts just acquired Wentz last offseason for what turned out to be a 2021 third-round pick and a first round pick in 2022. The former Eagles quarterback had a solid statistical season, throwing for 27 touchdowns against just seven interceptions. But he struggled in a must-win week 18 contest against the last-place Jaguars, which seemed to seal his fate in Indy.

Now Wentz returns to the NFC East, where he began his career when Philly took him with the second overall pick in the 2016 draft.
