Support for Carl Nassib is still going strong after he came out Monday and became the first openly gay active NFL player.
President Joe Biden took to Twitter and not only congratulated the Las Vegas Raiders player, but also NWSL player Kumi Yokoyama, the latter of whom recently came out as a transgender man.
“I’m so proud of your courage,” Biden said on Twitter. “Because of you, countless kids around the world are seeing themselves in a new light today.”
In his announcement, Nassib emphasized the importance of representation and visibility. He also said he will donate $100,000 to The Trevor Project, a suicide prevention organization for LGBTQA+ youth.
“I hope one day that videos like this and the whole coming out process are just not necessary,” Nassib said. “But until then, I will do my best and my part to cultivate a culture that’s accepting and compassionate.”
