Former Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid, the son of head coach Andy Reid, was finally charged with driving while intoxicated for a crash that seriously injured a 5-year-old girl. The Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office announced today that Reid has been charged with DWI, a class D felony with a potential prison sentence of one to seven years.
His actions have Ariel Young now suffering from brain damage as a result. Tiffany Verhulst, the girl’s cousin, gave the latest update on a donation page for the child.
“Ariel is at home recovering, we hope that her being in a familiar place will help her remember things. She is doing physical therapy but as of right now she still cannot walk, talk or eat like a normal 5 year old. Thank you everyone for your continued support,” Verhulst wrote.
The page has raised more than $570,000.
At the time of the accident, Reid informed officers he had been drinking before he slammed into a car that had pulled over to assist another car that had broken down. Analysis later concluded that Reid was driving 83.9 mph and that he had a blood alcohol concentration of .113. prosecutors also say Reid had “prior alcohol contacts in Pennsylvania and Arizona.”
Verhulst told USA Today she didn’t think the charges Reid received were enough.
“We don’t believe the charges are fair or harsh enough,” Verhulst told the paper. “It’s been incredibly hard knowing he’s out every day living his normal life and Ariel’s life is completely changed.

The Chiefs are regularly in contact with the family’s designated representative during this challenging time.”
