Patrick Mahomes has a damn good reason for staring back at a referee on one of his scrambles against the Detroit Lions in Week 4.
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback was flushed out to his right by a furious pass rush, and upon seeing an opening, Mahomes scrambled 25 yards for the first down.
As can be seen on the replay, Mahomes stared back at the ref for whatever reason during that play and it had social media buzzing.
The Chiefs quarterback was asked about the amusing moment during a press conference Wednesday and he explained that he wanted to make sure a flag wasn’t thrown because he didn’t want to waste his time running.
“I looked back to see if there was a penalty,” Mahomes said. “I saw that I had to run the run and I thought I could probably get the first down but I didn’t want to run 50 yards if I was going to get called back and have to run another play.

“I looked back to see if there was a penalty and when I realized there wasn’t one, I took off.”
“I still would’ve gotten the first down, it just might not have been a full sprint to the first down,” he said. “There could be hands to the face in the defense and stuff like that but once I saw there wasn’t a flag, I made sure to turn it up a little bit.”
Mahomes finished the game with 54 rushing yards in the 34-30 Chiefs win.
